DeSBi Retreat 2026
1-3 June 2026, Caputh
This year's retreat was the last retreat within the first funding period of our Research Unit (RU KI-FOR 5363). It took place from 1 to 3 June 2026 in Caputh and was attended by both principal investigators and members from the first funding period, as well as by potential principal investigators for the second funding period. The main focus was on wrapping up and presenting the RU's current projects, cross-fertilization, dissemination, and collaboration between projects, and project development for the RU's extension proposal. The retreat thus combined poster presentations on achievements in the first funding period and plans for the next, along with extensive discussions and cross-project breakout sessions. After three days of intensive discussion and brainstorming, we concluded the retreat with eight project ideas for the potential second funding period.
DeSBi Retreat 2025
8 - 9 July 2025, Potsdam
This year, the DeSBi community gathered for its annual retreat at the Dorint Hotel in Potsdam on 8–9 July 2025.
The research conducted by the seven teams of the RU was presented in the form of poster sessions, which provided ample opportunity for in-depth discussion thanks to several rounds of presentations.
In view of next year’s evaluation of the Research Unit, multiple discussion rounds were held to reflect on and plan the next phase of the Research Unit’s work. PhD students and postdoctoral researchers contributed valuable insights from their own experiences, identifying potential research directions. Key research areas identified as particularly relevant for future work include causal inference with time series data, the treatment of confounding variables, and computational biology - especially RNA and protein sequence analysis.

Our research unit, RU KI-FOR 5363, recently held its annual retreat—an event we eagerly anticipate each year. This retreat serves as a critical platform for promoting scientific exchange and taking full advantage of the diverse expertise within our project teams. More than just a gathering, it’s a space where we come together to discuss the progress of our work, showcase key achievements, and engage in meaningful discussions that drive innovation forward.
DAGStat 2025
24 - 28 March 2025, Berlin
The DeSBi Research Unit organized a dedicated session on its research topics at DAGStat 2025 in Berlin. The session, titled "Fusing Deep Learning and Statistics Towards Understanding Structured Biomedical Data," was chaired by our associated postdoctoral researcher, Georg Keilbar. Oral presentations were delivered by unit PhD students and postdocs: Masoumeh Javanbakht, Marco Simancher, Manuel Pfeuffer, and Sepideh Saran.
The presented topics covered a diverse range of cutting-edge research, including deep nonparametric conditional independence tests for images, visual explanations for statistical tests, deep modeling in the presence of known confounders with applications to neuroimaging data, and an empirical analysis of uncertainty quantification in genomics applications.
